I'm more gobsmacked US has exposed terminal screws in 2024..not seen those here since 1970 in my country. Our single switch mechs are 15mm square mounted in a plastic plate..google "PDL 681"
I live in an older flat and I am like 90 percent sure that's how all my switches and plugs are wired or at least like two thirds of them are.
please learn basic computer animation
Just feed the switch
Yeah I don't think the ground input should be on the same side as the hot. They should definitely make them like the old ones and put the ground on the neutral side
I was excited about the Leviton Edge when they came out, just to find out they’re already failing very badly not long after, so I don’t have hope in this Hubbel design
Pure stupidity. I’ll stick to 15 and 20 Amp.
I’m binging your channel on this overcast Sunday, John! 😄❤️
Do yourself a favor and get a chain file to sharpen. My 6-inch "Hopto", which is a Chinese model, is 1/4". The chain comes a bit dull. Keep the chain oiled and sharp. ALSO, do not over-tighten the chain. There should be some slack.
when you say "14-30R receptacle" you are saying receptacle receptacle... the R in 14-30R stands for Receptacle... The P in 14-30P stands for Plug... Either drop the letter or don't say the word.
Thanks appreciate the info
My pleasure. Happy to help.
you could've made a much more simplified design if you mirrored both switches and had the light in the middle but ok I got the idea.
I thought about doing that actually after the white board presentation but I was worried people would loose interest.
just another example that cheapasses kill people.
Great video. Such simple tricks with humongous results. Thanks
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching.
Does this pose the same risk of coming loose as traditional back stabbing did? Explain why or why not. Thank you
I don't think so. I going to make another video comparing the difference.
Brilliant but confusing! You made it make sense, John!
Thanks Ed. Did you see the video on the Chicago 3-way? It's similar but more hazardous.
Our old (1977-era) Litton microwave oven had a 90 degree plug that would have gone down with the ground up ... backwards of most plugs today. Always thought that was interesting.
The first step always is to turn off the power at the breaker panel.
Geepers..how was that ever legal. Livening up neutral..if the ES bulb is wet or has condensation high potential for electric shock touching it when live.
Thanks for giving me the courage to throughwire using the connecton ports. It worked out great!
Glad I could help!
have a different design of this class of can. step 1 solution was easy for me, i just bent the plastic out of the way. i think the white plastic is to act as a dirt filter. the can i have is a 2 gal one for the lawn mower.
I thought they were dirt filters too but if you look that up you will find it made to prevent fire or explosion.
Nice! This isn't really hard to understand at all. Beats me why some people have a hard time figuring this out. It's dangerous because it both routes power from the hot lead where it's not supposed to go as well as puts the neutral lead through a switch, which means the hot lead will still be applying power to the load when it shouldn't. Thanks!
I found this chicago 3 way in a 1920s farm house here in Denver. the home owner changed the switches but got the wires mixed up. I figured it out and got it working so my recommendation. if you change the switches pay attention to where the terminals are on the old switches and on the new one(especially the common).
0:14 (Although I’m from New York and I pick on them all the time…) You erased New Jersey! (And Virginia’s Eastern Shore)
oops..
These are trash. You better hope those come with a bonus smoke detector
Not exactly the three-way I was hoping for in a video 😜
Chigago 3 way : the H bridge for those in electronics
I got the crap shocked out of me when I was 11 years old standing on two chairs...my grandparents house that was built in the '30s....that probably explains it. I was at the top of the stairs, and quickly at the bottom. Safety wasn't number one in the '70s...
Honestly, the wiring diagram is kind of elegant...if you ignore all the safety concerns.
So I can finally use that 10 amp breaker I've had for past 15 years
Great vid. Great explanation. Viewers who don't understand any of this should not do any electrical work in their home!
Thank you!
Down is correct
Very interesting. The set of circumstances that would lead someone to have to wire something this way is silly. Why not run a larger conduit between switches....ect...ect. I guess the questions could go on forever. But I guess its cool to see what someone came up with to solve a paticular problem they were having.
Gound down
Found down
Hi I'm Vernon sir I put all mine found down ty sir
My pleasure Vernon.. I install ground down as well.
Great photo of switch wiring. You toggle it and it would short the hot lead directly to ground. More than just a code violation, ha, ha!
No because in the photo the white wire is not the neutral. It's a re-identified white wire used as a switch loop. This is actually a common practice.
@@BackyardMaine That's true but in the intro photo it shows the black taped white wire and the copper ground lead connected to the same terminal.
@@anotherjoe5675 Take a closer look. The ground lead is on the other side of the switch connected to the ground screw.
In 30 years of doing electric work I've 8:02 only seen this one time in an old knob and tube home we were rewiring. My boss at the time called it a switched neutral 3 way and showed us how it actually worked. Very cool to see you describe it with such great detail.
I make display panels to illustrate things like setting up a 3 way system with a light bulb, switches and even a breaker box etc. I have a male plug leading from the display's breaker box that simply plugs into an outlet. Since this display is a device that plugs into an outlet like a lamp, iron, and no actual interfacing with the house wiring is done I am assuming there is no code violation buy not getting a permit. It's kind of like no one gets a permit to make their own lamp that simply plugs into an outlet. Same here, I make a panel board with a three-way switch system that is powered by simply plugging it into an outlet. I do this for illustrative purposes to teach my grandkids electrical concepts. Do you see this as a code violation? Ps...I am currently working on a display panel to illustrate a Four-way switch system. I will also add that I am not a certified electrician. All self-taught. Does one have to be a certified electrician to make one-self a lamp or any electrical device that simply is plugged into an outlet?
This may depend on any requirements in your local area rather than the NEC. I think you're ok from a legal standpoint as long as they're cord and plug connected and you don't sell them. Be careful though.. More people die from 120v than any other voltage.
This is a pretty big change for wire slingers. Our county is at least 3-4 years behind the NEC so I wont really have to worry about this for a little while.
Kinda silly to make requirements based on a new switch requiring something. Just dont use them, unless they come up with a way not to need it.
I think the decision was made because what people do when they try to add a smart switch and there is no neutral. Many don't say oh well I can't use it.. They connect the neutral to the ground wire to see if that works. It does, so they button everything up and they are done. They feel pretty smart too, but they don't know they have just added current flow on the system ground which is hazardous. This change is an attempt to prevent that from happening on new constriction.
Was not aware of neutral requirement, glad to know, and I always use the standard 3-way method, best way to go, and I would never use any method out of California , ha.
Absolutely agree. We use system with less current, and we completely avoid this method. Our recrpracles are up to 16Amp and service loops are mandatory. Greetings from household 230/400V country.
Interesteing! Thanks for sharing.

Very cool. Here in Oklahoma, many residential electricians and service electricians know of the Arkansas 3-way and the California 3-way, but this is the first I've heard of this one. - Arkansas: in old houses where the circuit hot was brought first to the fixture box in the middle of the ceiling, a 14:2 Romex cable would be taken to the first 3W switch where only the black was used for power to the switch. (The white was not used). Then between switches, again 14:2 was strung for travelers. Then a third 14:2 was run from the second 3W switch back to the light fixture as a switchleg. (Again, the white was unused.) - California: In stairwells where the circuit is closer to the upper switch and also to the fixture than any of these three are to the bottom switch, a 12:2 Romex is run to the upper switch for hot and neutral. Then a 12:3 is run from the upper switch down two the lower switch: white phased as constant hot, red and black for travelers. In the upper switch box, the circuit hot is NOT landed on the common screw of the upper switch; it is instead spliced to the hot-phased white inside the upper switch box. Finally, a 12:2 is run from the upper switch box to the fixture: white being neutral, and black being the switchleg tied the common screw.
Interesting.. I made a video on the California 3-way as well but I have not seen the Arkansas 3-way.
Should call it the Maine 3-way instead of Chicago.
Sure.. But we're still waiting for electricity here in Maine.
